Hayley Van Nieuwkerk

Principal and Grade R Bumblebee Class

I am the proud mom of three adult children, and yes, I survived the toddler years (and lived to tell the tale!). As a parent, I remember wishing for a place where my children could feel truly safe, loved, and supported and that is what I have aimed to create at Buckets and Books. For the past 11 years, I have had the joy and privilege of calling this special space my second home.

It is my passion to ensure every child in our care is given the freedom to learn, grow, and thrive through play, all while being surrounded by warmth, encouragement, and lots of laughter. These early years are the most vital in a child’s development, and what a gift it is to play a small part in helping them become kind, compassionate, and curious little humans. Every day brings new moments of discovery, not just for the children, but for me too.

I get to tap into my inner child, witness countless “firsts,” and learn daily from the smallest teachers with the biggest hearts. Buckets and Books isn’t just a school, it is a community, a family, and a place where childhood is celebrated. And I am so lucky to be part of it.

I am a mom of two boys aged 11 and 15. My youngest attended Buckets and Books for two years before going to Grade 1 and from the moment he joined, I absolutely loved how it was more than just a school, it was a family. I previously worked for a medical practice for 6 years but when the opportunity arose to join the Buckets and Books team, I grabbed it with both hands. I love being a part of such a wonderful and loving environment and seeing how happy all the kiddies and staff are here, brings me so much joy.

Being part of the Buckets and Books family has been the best decision I have ever made.

Stella Murray

Grade 00 - Dragonfly Class

As a little girl, it was my dream to become a teacher. Teaching is my passion, and I am so blessed to do something I love every day! I obtained a Bachelor of Education Degree from Wits University in 2014 and went on to teach at a Primary School for seven years, where I was fortunate enough to act as the Grade Head, as well as Head of Foundation Phase Mathematics. However, my true calling lies in the classroom.

There is nothing more rewarding for a teacher than to watch children learn and flourish under their nurturing guidance. I am so happy to be part of the Buckets & Books Family!

René Fourie

Grade 00 - Firefly Class

I graduated from RAU University with a degree in Education. My passion for teaching began at a young age, I knew I wanted to be a teacher from my very first day at school. I taught Grade 1 for 27 years, and it was an incredibly rewarding experience, as Grade 1 forms the foundation of a child’s entire school journey. After 27 years, I felt it was time for a change and to spend more time with my new granddaughter. Joining the Buckets and Books family reignited my passion for teaching. I believe that my many years of experience with Grade 1 learners help me to prepare these little humans for their big step into 'big school'. As a teacher, I am committed to creating a fun, adventurous, safe, and inclusive environment for all the children.

I strive to make learning fun and exciting, which in turn encourages the children to be enthusiastic and eager to learn something new each day. My greatest satisfaction is seeing the progress each little human makes.

Loago Nkumane

Grade 000 – Cricket Class

I come from a family of teachers on my father’s side and nurses on my mother’s side, caring and teaching is in my DNA. After travelling to the Republic of Ireland to study a diploma in Business Management, I realised that my true passion is teaching and working with children. I started my teaching career in 2015 as a teacher’s assistant in the 4 – 5 year age group class and quickly moved on to the head teacher. To date, I have taught primary school IsiZulu and Mathematics. I have tutored and au-paired, but nothing has felt more meaningful or has filled my heart with as much joy as working within the Early Childhood Development (ECD) environment. I am currently enrolled at UNISA doing my third year of my Bachelor of Education foundation phase majoring in ECD.

Every day I wake up and look forward to my day ahead at Buckets and Books.

Jamie Tonkin

Grade 000 – Spider Class

I have always had a passion for children since I can remember. To watch them grow into the beautiful little people that they are, is truly a blessing. I am very family-orientated and Buckets and Books has given me the opportunity to be part of this beautiful little family and I could not be grateful! I matriculated in 2019 and have completed my NQF 4 and NQF 5. In the afternoons, I au-pair and this fulfils my soul.

It truly brings me the most joy to be able to watch these little humans excel from one strength to the next, enjoying their best life during their school day.

Grade 0000 – Ant Class

From the moment I stepped into Buckets and Books, I have fallen in love with the lively atmosphere, the laughter echoing through the classrooms, and the bright, curious little faces that greet me every morning. Teaching in the playgroup is more than a job; it’s my passion, my joy, and truly my whole heart and soul. I absolutely love witnessing those special “firsts”.

Being part of these milestones feels like sharing in a tiny miracle every single day. It is truly an honour to be a child’s first teacher and to be able to guide them, encourage them, and cheer them on as they grow.

Playgroup - Caterpillar Class

I have always been fascinated by the human body and movement. I’ve been working with Bio scientists, CrossFit trainers and Physiotherapists for almost 15 years. I was given an opportunity to facilitate a neuro-diverse little girl and this amazing little person changed my life! Since then, I knew that teaching, is what I need to do. I would not change my job for anything.

It is so rewarding, and special to watch our children achieve all that they can. I am very blessed and privileged to be a part of the Buckets and Books family.

Melissa Mc Queen

Grade 0000 – Beetle Class

I have always had a deep passion for working with young children, and I truly believe that the early years are the most magical and formative of a child's life. Watching my little learners grow, explore, and develop into the incredible individuals they are destined to become is a constant source of joy for me. I enjoy spending time outdoors and creating a nurturing environment where the children feel safe to express themselves and discover the world around them. In addition to teaching, I also work as an au pair in the afternoons, which allows me to continue supporting children in different stages of their growth. Outside of work, I’m passionate about staying active and enjoy doing CrossFit, which keeps me energised and motivated both at school and in life.

I am married to the love of my life, and together we enjoy life's little adventures. Being part of the Buckets and Books family is a privilege, and I am grateful every day for the opportunity to be a part of these children's lives.
